Asra Hassan, Ph.D., is a lead research scientist at the Materials Discovery Research Institute and lead of the Accelerated Methodologies group, where she helps drive accelerated discovery across high-throughput synthesis, advanced characterization, and lab automation. Since joining in September 2023, she has developed and operated experiment pipelines on our automation platforms, integrated characterization into design of experiments, and coordinated execution and data integration with project teams so priority concepts advance to validated materials. She also leads a synthesis research effort focused on safer materials for water applications, establishing clear structure to property relationships and demonstrating performance under relevant conditions.

Before to joining the Materials Discovery Research Institute, Hassan was a Research Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, advancing 2D and hybrid nanomaterials from controlled synthesis to validated performance for mission-relevant applications and informing material specifications and test protocols. She completed postdoctoral research at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the High-Performance Materials Institute, focusing on colloidal and layered systems with quantitative characterization. Hassan earned her Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Illinois Chicago, where she developed doped semiconductor nanocrystal systems and scalable quantum-dot chemistries, including mechanistic insight into anisotropic growth.
