A lab on a mission

Solving safety challenges through materials discovery

Opened in 2024 with a nonprofit mission, UL Research Institutes’ Materials Discovery Research Institute is dedicated to advancing the discovery of materials that present opportunities to improve the world’s safety through eco-remediation and energy generation and storage. Our mission is to uncover and develop materials that not only repair the damage done to natural systems but to also enable cleaner, more efficient energy solutions for the future to ensure a safer world for all.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to speed, precision, and purpose. We combine cutting-edge computational modeling, high-throughput experimentation, and data-driven insights to dramatically accelerate the path from idea to impact. This approach allows us to move beyond traditional trial-and-error research, enabling discoveries that are both scientifically groundbreaking and scalable.

To maximize our reach and relevance, we collaborate with leading academic institutions, philanthropic organizations, government agencies, venture capital firms, and industry innovators. Together, we are building a global network of partners who share our vision to transform materials science into a powerful engine for environmental restoration and energy innovation.

Over 130 years of safety science in action

Since 1894, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has been a leading safety organization focused on building scientific knowledge about safety threats and converting that knowledge into tangible actions in the world to abate those threats. UL Research Institutes carries forward UL’s legacy by transforming rigorous scientific research into meaningful real-world impact, advancing safety for people today and for future generations.

UL Research Institutes is made up of six affiliated research institutes. Each institute is dedicated to resolving globally significant safety challenges through both research and action.

ULRI’s six institutes include:

Pioneering Researchers

The minds behind the mission

Every breakthrough begins with the people who make it possible. Our research is powered by a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and technologists working at the forefront of materials discovery. Their expertise drives our innovation and turns complex challenges into real-world solutions.
