Shaoyang Lin, Ph.D.

Shaoyang Lin, Ph.D. is a research scientist in the renewable energy group at the Materials Discovery Research Institute, working on electrolyzers for water splitting and other applications. Currently, he is focusing on improving the performance and durability of AEMWE and PEMWE by optimizing the interface between PTL, catalyst, ionomer, and ion exchange membrane.

During his Ph.D. study, Lin investigated catalysis mechanisms and charge transfer pathways of electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reactions catalyzed by metal-organic framework based heterogeneous catalysts. He was a postdoc scholar at the Ohio State University—focusing on illustrating the reaction mechanism, especially the role of redox non-innocent ligands in dirhodium HER electrocatalysts. After that, he joined Liquid Sunlight Alliance at the California Institute of Technology studying the effect of electrolytes on electrochemical CO2 reduction. Before joining the Materials Discovery team, he was a senior electrochemist at Oxylus Energy, scaling up CO₂-to-MeOH electrolyzer.

Lin holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  In addition to his postdoctoral research at the Ohio State University, he also conducted postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology.
